Matternet has unveiled M3, its next-generation autonomous drone delivery platform, with commercial service targeted for the second half of 2027. The system combines a higher-capacity aircraft with dedicated dock and package-portal infrastructure designed for food, retail, healthcare and industrial logistics.
What happened
Announced September 28, M3 is designed to carry packages up to 11 pounds within a 10-mile service radius. Matternet says the platform consists of the M3 Aircraft, M3 Dock and M3 Portal, allowing merchants or healthcare sites to stage packages for autonomous pickup without an operator physically handling the aircraft.
Dave’s Hot Chicken was named an initial U.S. launch partner, while Apian was named a U.K. launch partner. Matternet is targeting commercial service in the second half of 2027 and says additional development, testing, manufacturing scale-up and regulatory approvals remain ahead.
Why it matters
M3 pushes Matternet beyond the smaller-payload healthcare model associated with its M2 system and toward broader restaurant, retail and industrial use cases. The 11-pound payload class, 10-mile radius and dock-plus-portal architecture position the company to compete for higher-volume autonomous delivery networks rather than point-to-point specialty missions alone.
The launch also adds another meaningful systems architecture to the commercial drone-delivery market: not just an aircraft, but an integrated operating stack built around unattended dispatch, charging and package handoff.
What to watch
- Progress toward Matternet’s second-half 2027 commercial-service target
- FAA and other regulatory approvals required for M3 operations
- Additional launch partners and deployment markets
- Whether the larger payload and micro-hub model expands Matternet beyond healthcare logistics
