The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded $12 million across 19 unmanned-aircraft research projects spanning long-range cargo operations, detect-and-avoid, satellite communications, UAS traffic management, identity and authorization, urban airspace management and mission orchestration.
Why this matters
The awards map closely to the infrastructure commercial drone networks need to scale. Aircraft alone are not enough: routine operations depend on detect-and-avoid, resilient communications, identity, traffic coordination, fleet orchestration and increasingly complex airspace-management software.
Companies and technologies to watch
Recipients include DroneUp, ANRA Technologies, Censys Technologies, ResilienX, Aerial Vantage, Devorto and other organizations working on enabling technologies for cargo and advanced UAS operations.
For operators and investors, the signal is that commercial UAS integration is broadening from aircraft certification toward network-level infrastructure: communications, identity, airspace services, dispatch, autonomy and interoperability.
