Uber and Zipline have announced a strategic partnership that aims to bring autonomous drone delivery into Uber’s commerce ecosystem, with a stated ambition of reaching one million deliveries per day by the end of 2029.
What happened
The agreement combines Uber’s consumer and merchant platform with Zipline’s autonomous delivery technology and operating network. Uber is also investing in Zipline as part of the relationship.
Why it matters
The target signals how quickly the strategic conversation around drone delivery is changing. The relevant comparison is no longer a handful of experimental flights. Major commerce platforms are beginning to treat autonomous aerial delivery as infrastructure capable of supporting very large transaction volumes.
For Zipline, access to Uber’s merchant and customer network could increase delivery density. For Uber, Zipline provides an aviation capability that would be expensive and slow to reproduce internally.
